  1. https://youtu.be/ZR5XGTpophI Johnny Cash‘s “A Boy Named Sue” was one of my favorite songs written by Johnny Cash. Its got a distinctive upbeat country beat and the lyrics are sure to make you chortle.

https://youtu.be/TLV4_xaYynY Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along The Watchtower” was one of my dad’s favorite Jimi Hendrix songs, but to be frank my father loved pretty much all of Jimi Hendrix’s songs. Jimi Hendrix’s sheer expertise and skill with the guitar is clearly shown in the layering technique he used in this song to get that distinctive sound. A song written and played by one of the best guitarists of all time, it really is an auditory masterpiece to be relished.

Link Wray’s “Rumble” is a rock and roll song that includes powerful chords. This music does not contain any lyrics. Link Wray was the only American guitarist to have an instrumental band with no words included in his songs. This song/ music especially contained more color and weight to give it a heavy metallic sound. His influence towards the society was immense through music and made a change towards the way people looked at music because of the unique sounds he made on his guitar.

Jesse Ed Davis’s “Washita Love Child” is a song that has a special sound of blues. This song contains some “pow wow style” which gave it more of a Native American vibe towards the song. This song was a hit single that Jesse Ed Davis was known for. Jesse Ed Davis was proud to be an Indian and brought people the music they wanted. There was no musician who played like him as he came up with a new genre of music every time.

Trying to find “Little Wing” sung and played by Jimi Hendrix is quite difficult so the best I could find is one with Chinese bells in the background. Other than that, the two versions of this song is phenomenal. Hendrix’s playing is felt through the years separating us and the electronic screen. When I asked my dad for his favorite Hendrix song and was very quick to answer “Little Wing.” After listening to it, I can see why. The song shows off Hendrix’s unbelievable talent for playing guitar in a rock form that somehow sounds like jazz.

With a honky-tonk kind of sound, “you belladonna you” by Jesse Ed Davis seems to have a great culmination of different musical genres. The heavy electric guitar and drum line give a rock feel to the song and the choir makes the song sound like a jazz song while the style of playing gives it a country aspect. This song sounds like a Styx song because of the timing of the drums and the steel guitar. Although I cannot hear a prominent Native American factor in this song, I can hear remnants of old Native American songs in the choir.

"Every Night is a Saturday Night" by Jesse Ed Davis has a mix of pop and country sounds. I don't really hear any type of Native American tone to it but his guitar playing knocks the song out of the park. There is really not that much singing in the song, where there is more instrumental music because Jesse Ed Davis was best known for his guitar playing. This is a good song to listen to when you're ready for a night out on the weekend.

Buffy Sainte-Marie's version of "Helpless" is a sort of slow-like song that you will get you dancing with a partner. While looking at the lyrics, I can see some connection in the lyrics that Native Americans had to face. The lyrics, "The chains are locked and tied across the door," made me think about the reservations the Native Americans lived on. The song has more of a slow, blues type vibe with some drums in the background. Though not many Native American type instruments and sounds are portrayed in the song, the song itself made me think about the hardships Native Americans had to face. What I really liked about the song was the ending. The ending kind of died out the voices which gave the effect of Native Americans dying out.

“Rumble”, by Link Wray is something that just lets you sit back and enjoy the music for what it is. It is just the beautiful strumming of the guitar matched with a few other instruments in the background, that just bring out an amazing sound. It is calming yet upbeat at the same time, and really just makes you smile.

“All along the watchtower”, by Jimi Hendrix is yet another great guitar performance. This time around we do get vocals though, and they are just as great as the guitar. You cant help but acknowledge the beautiful flow of the guitar and how perfectly matched it is with Jimi’s voice. You also just have to appreciate the parts where he just lets the guitar do all the talking, and it is just a magnificent sound. Truly one of a kind.

The song “Hey Joe,” by Jimi Hendrix is a slow and has a somewhat ominous tone to it as well. This song also focuses on instrumentals that feature Jimi Hendrix’s guitar playing, and the combination of the guitar and his voice bring out the true meaning of the song.

Jesse Ed Davis’ song “Golden Sun Goddess” seems like a country song, however, I also hear some Native American tones throughout the song as well. There are more references to the religion Christianity, showing the cross over from Native American songs to new music genres.

“Tulsa County” by Jesse Ed Davis has a country feeling as well as a Native American tone. This song talks about him being in Tulsa county and how he might go down to Mexico. Jesse Ed Davis was proud of his culture and he showed those things through his songs. While the lyrics in this song is very short, you get to hear more of the instrumental music throughout the song.

“The Wind Cries Mary” is a very slow song with both country, rock, and Native American tones throughout the song. While there aren’t many lyrics, you really get to appreciate Hendrix’s guitar playing especially at the parts where it’s just the guitar. Many people played the guitar especially during that time, but the way that Hendrix plays it is very distinct and is one reason why he is such a great musician.

Link Wray was one of the biggest influencers for the music industry. His song “Rumble” made a notable mark on what we know to be rock and roll music today. Wray, along with other Native American artists, was also a key influencer on the origins of blues music. His songs brought a new color to the music industry because it was something people had never heard before. This is what made his sound so special: the uniqueness.

Charley Patton was another notable figure in the 1920s music industry. His song “Down in the Dirt Road Blues'' proved to be very influential in the evolution of blues music. He has been said to have had a raw sound that many people loved. Being of Native American, white, creole, and African American ancestry, as well as being from Mississippi, meant that he was rich in blues history. Since it was illegal to own a drum on a plantation, for fear of rebellion, Patton learned to play the drum on his guitar. Through this he was able to find his own identity through music, while continuing the traditions of his ancestors.

Peter LaFarge, an American Indian folk singer of the 50s and 60s, combines the stories of the Indians with a guitar tune that’s melodic yet groovy. He tells the tale of a specific Indian boy in his song, “The Ballad of Ira Hayes”. He tones down his melody as he tells the stories through each verse and brings the melody back with the chorus, making it an enjoyable story telling song. Despite the dark tales of the Indian boys life under the white’s power, his song is very easy to listen to and sing along to.

Buffy Sainte-Marie, an indigenous Canadian-American singer who’s used her music to focus on the issues of the ingineiuous people. Her song “Universal Soldier” focuses on not one group but a sort of spirit of war that is found universally and has affected everyone in one way or another. She sings to a fast paced guitar strum, simple yet impactful. It’s tune makes her words powerful yet enjoyable. She talks about the bloodshed of not only her people but all, giving this song a sense of unison and positivity. It’s not too melodic but the beat of the strum makes it somewhat danceable and fun.

Link Wray’s “Rumble”, released in 1958 was the blueprint for the rock music to come in the following years. Despite the lack of vocals, the instrumentals were so influential, it was later on banned on the account of fear of inciting gang violence just from the music alone.

Jesse Ed Davis was an influential Native American guitar player, who at the height of his career, was asked by many world renowned musicians to play with them. One of these many instances was when he was asked to play with Taj Mahal. In “Ain’t That A Lot Of Love”, Davis’ guitar playing takes the forefront, which was an example of him bringing in his Native American influences in mainstream music.

Johnny Cash’s song, “Ring of Fire,” was a hit country song back in the 60’s. Due to his curiosity with Native American tunes involving issues, he recorded La Farge’s songs. Because of the political information within the songs, many radio stations refused to play them. Cash took the extra step to try to allow the stations to play his songs by putting an ad in “Billboard” and teasing their bravery and courage. “Ring of Fire” starts with an upbeat tempo involving trumpets to produce a type of beat one can dance to. He slowly sings in the beginning, then picks up the tone and speed of his voice toward the middle and end of the song. The background singers and the trumpets add a type of element that lightens the song and makes it seem happier. The lyrics of the song are harsh, but the instrumentals steer it away from that section.

Watching Jimi Hendrix perform with his electric guitar was quite entertaining. His song, “Hey Joe” is a slower song where he speaks some of the lyrics in the middle of the song. In the beginning of the video, he plays the electric guitar with his teeth, which can definitely catch people’s attentions. The instrumentals of the song were the same beats up until Hendrix’s solo with the electric guitar. The solo allows for a change of tone and feeling of the song. I also noticed the repetition of the lyrics and how the words, “Hey Joe”, are said in many different ways in regards to the tone of his voice.

Indian chief by Stevie salas is a classic rock sounding track. It has drums in the back with a guitar over it and not much else. It has raw vocals that at times can sound a little harsh but his voice has a more calm and relaxed tone and volume to it. The song pays homage to his Native American roots with the title as well as some of the lyrics.

Purple haze by Jimi Hendrix is one of my dads favorite songs so along with its cultural and historical significance, it also has personal significance to me. The song has a much more aggressive sounding guitar and beat on the drums. Jimi’s voice is also in more of a loud and brash tone, almost as if his voice is raspy from yelling into the microphone. The energy of the song is very confident, a little reckless, possibly even defiant, and I think this made a lot of his songs popular.

  15. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZBlqcbpmxYJimi Hendrix was mostly famous because of his unique way of playing the guitar. Which was why I chose this song, “Voodoo Chile,” because the song is really being revolved around his guitar, with less lyrics. This song really is at the heart of rock and roll, whenever you need a song to jam to it gives you that extra kick to your day. This song, “Voodoo Chile” is a psychedelic rock about using voodoo to have supernatural powers. The song is Jimi's way of bringing listeners into his world and immersing them into what it’s like for him when he’s having one of his trips.
    Jesse Ed Davis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMTMise5hmE Jesse Ed Davis was one of the famous core Native Americans who have set the roots for American music. Unlike Jesse’s other fellow artist he wasn’t afraid to show the world that he was Native American. Especially in this song, “Washita Love Child,” is about his Native American side. It has a fun upbeat vibe to it, to represent the beat that’s played during one of their POWWOW dances. He even includes traditional singing in this song. He gives it a modern twist to it so it could reach listeners from all over America.

“Farther on Down the Road” by Jesse Ed Davis offers a warm blend of an electric guitar, brass instruments, and a choral backing track. It tells of a companionship that is sure to last as long as the road goes on. Though the song is not specific in its subject matter, its composition reflects the country-blues style of music that Davis helped to popularize and resembles an uplifting spiritual.

“Iron Mountain” by Peter La Farge is a soothing tribute to the experience of meeting and befriending a horse. The chorus, which sings of the titular iron mountain upon which his encounter takes place, is dispersed throughout verses of La Farge talking over a simple guitar melody. Both in its emphasis on mutual respect between animal and human, as well as in its folksy tune, “Iron Mountain” can be seen as a representation of the Native American way of life.

Johnny Cash's song cluster was a song within his Album Bitter Tears. The Tune in the song was very catchy and has some kind of string instrument being plucked in the background. I thought that it gave the song more of a native american background because of the instroments being used. In the song it also talks about a General not being respected anymore because of finding out all the horrible things that he actually was doing and nobody knew it.

"Rumble" by Link Wray is a song that will truly make the hair stand up. I thought that Link Wrays song had such a profound sound that no other artist can replicate. But the story of Native Americans hits so much harder. It is said that the song "Rumble" had evoked memories of government prohibition and created a strong image for Native Americans. The song was just so strong for having no words. But the distortion was so unmatched during the time and created a strong image.

    "Mirrors" by Justin Timberlake
"Mirrors" is a love song by Justin Timberlake. The song uses mirrors as a metaphor, and Justin sings about how his partner is his other half and when he looks at her its like looking into a mirror. The orchestral background matches the sentiment of the song really well, capturing Justin's sorrow of the thought of losing his loved one.

"Sweet Child O Mine" by Guns n Roses
"Sweet Child O Mine" is an 80s classic love song. The song talks about the feelings of warmth and happiness when looking upon your partner. Lead guitarist Slash provides an iconic guitar solo for this song, which really puts the song over the top. Axl Roses' high vocals bring out the energy in the whole song.

I liked Rita Coolidgeʻs song “Weʻre All Alone”(1978). I had never heard of her before and have never listened to any of her sons until now. I liked the relaxing and slow place of her song and the soothing tone of her voice. The song has a nice and easygoing flow that is easy to follow and relax too. The song has a slightly sad feel to it and the lyrics are on the sad and lonely side but her delivery of the word gives the song a more encouraging feel that hits the ear in a very pleasant way.

Out of all the songs made by Native American musicians my personal favorite is Link Wray's “Rumble”. Rock and instrumental music isn't my preferred genre that being said I was very surprised to find that I was enjoying listening to Rumble. The song is extremely catchy despite having no words. After listening to it once or twice I started to subconsciously hum or whistle the beat of the song. I really enjoy the sound of the guitar. It reminds me a lot of old southern sounds and makes me think of cowboys. Rumble has a way of making you feel badass and it makes you feel motivated to to something.

Tell Your Story Walkin’ by Stevie Salas sounds like a classic rock song. It has a fast beat and guitar solos in all the right places. This song is the first track on the album Back from the Living, released in 1994. I like the message of Tell Your Story Walkin’, which is to listen to your own instincts and to not lose track of who you are and where you came from. This song reminds me of music by Guns N Roses, and I can tell that Stevie Salas has inspired many musicians today.

Universal Soldier by Buffy Saint-Marie was featured in Rumble. I remember really liking it, so I listened to it again and paid more attention to the lyrics. The song speaks about a universal soldier who fights for all causes and all people. I think music can be a universal soldier. Every country and culture has its own music, and each kind of music means something different to different people.

  21. Two Native American musicians I chose were Link Wray and Jimi Hendrix.
Link Wray is Native American, by his mother, who is of the Shawnee tribe. While rumble is my favorite song of his, I would like to highlight his song called Shawnee.
As for Jimi Hendrix, we all learned about his Native American roots in class. A song I would like to highlight would be Little Wing. The intro immediately hooks you to keep listening, as opens with an original mini guitar solo. It’s melodic beat is quite different from his harder core bluesy guitar riffs.
