Serving as a nice change from modern synthetic instruments, “still feel.” by half•alive captures the feeling of finding hope amidst a time of disappointing uncertainty with the use of the image of an alien crashing into Earth. Understandably, many dub “still feel” as the group’s breakout single since the group would seemingly look toward Twenty One Pilots as their primary source of inspiration. Lead singer Joshua Taylor’s round voice communicates perfectly with the abstract, electronic pop melody as the song’s power starts softly and slowly builds. Accompanied by a chorus similar to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Taylor sings, “I can feel a kick down in my soul/And it’s pulling me back to Earth to let me know/And this heart that beats inside of me will show.” Listening to this song will leave you in a jazzy mood for the rest of the day while reflecting on the importance of having faith.

“Drivers License” by Olivia Rodrigo is the newest hit song everyone is singing. Rodrigo’s song sparks drama between the narrator and their ex-partner. The song starts off with the sound of a car turning on, signifying the narrator is ready to leave. Rodrigo’s use of her lyrics shows the drama she might be dealing with in her life. “I guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me / ‘Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street” symbolizes the song her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett, wrote for her. Seeing this as an old relationship, he moved on to another girl, Sabrina Carpenter, which is portrayed in the lyrics, “And you’re probably with that blonde girl.” Rodrigo’s song has a very sad tone to it, which symbolizes the fact that the narrator misses their ex-partner and wants to be back together with them. This song may be depressing but will definitely get stuck in your head.

A gift was left upon us on Christmas Day of 2020 by the american R&B singer-songwriter, SZA. Good Days, a rhythmic hit single that was released on Christmas, transported our minds to a place somewhere gentler and calmer amidst the chaos and negativities in life. The quiet sounds of birds singing slowly fade into a heavy beat that conveys the song’s combination of rhythms with elements of pop. The beat creates an aura that improves your mood and uplifts your spirits. The spanish guitar sound creates a ripple of energy throughout the entire song. Her lyrics show the vulnerability and feelings one can experience throughout the hard times in life. Biblical references through her lyrics including Jericho, Job, and Jesus’ cross, “Feeling like Jericho/Feeling like Job when he lost his sh—.” Although SZA struggles emotionally and loses control at times, she can still look forward to the good days. Even with the troublesome of the pandemic, there will be good days ahead.

“Welcome to Wonderland” by Anson Seabra takes us all back to simpler times in our childhood. The song helps remind us of the amazing fairy tales that we were told and what it was like to be a kid. Seabra takes us on a journey of welcoming us into a new story and when entering Wonderland, Seabra explains “we’ve got it all / potions and pastries that make you grow tall” which draws you in and who wouldn’t want to go to Wonderland. While experiencing all of this, Seabra turns the mood stating, “Nothing around here is quite as it seems / Not sure if anything’s real or a dream.” This symbolizes how we all eventually grow up and the things we used to know and believe doesn’t quite seem the same. This song will make you remember what it was like when you had no worries, and what it is like to experience your own Wonderland. Everyone holds their childhood dearly so “Don’t let it leave.”

Bazzi’s song “Young and Alive” gives off a lighthearted and carefree type of vibe. The melodic melody along with the easy-going lyrics create a feeling inside its listeners that can only be described as youthfulness. The message of the song is clearly portrayed in the lyrics: “Ridin’ my bike like I’m too young to drive. Careless and free like it’s 2005. Had to chill the f*** out, take a trip outside. To have fun with my friends like I’m young and alive.” This song seems to have the power of reminding people of their roots and simpler times. A song that has the capability of bringing people to reminisce about their childhood is pretty amazing. When I listen to the song it feels as if I should be blasting the volume while driving over the freeway with the windows down. The title holds true in accurately making us feel “young and alive.”

BeyoncĂ©’s “Pretty Hurts” delivers a social message towards the women in society on the pressure that women face to attain physical perfection. The metaphor, “perfection is the disease of a nation”, portrays the way in which women struggle to fit into the standard of beauty while the pain inside is something you cannot get rid of. This relates to current moments where people are preoccupied with what society thinks of “pretty”. Essentially, the overall image of “Pretty Hurts” creates a juxtaposition between the two seperate words. Pretty is often seen as a positive word and feels often honored to be called pretty. However, the word “hurts” is not always a feeling or emotion people want to experience as it is seen as a negative expression. With the power pop and the soul ballad, the mood of the music and lyrics instrumentally fixate the sturdy background of pain, power, and destruction as BeyoncĂ© shows off her dynamic vocals throughout the song.

Lil Baby from Atlanta, Georgia, known for his thug vibe drill rap, shocked everyone through his educated and emotion filled song called The Bigger Picture in album My Turn. He carries his anger from his gangster rap through to this song to speak on the riots and BLM protests. As an African American, he spits facts and emotions as a voice and influence for his people. The high tempo piano and drums give an almost pressing type beat where he’s conveying a message in urgency. Over this powerful and moving beat, he states, “It's too many mothers that's grieving / They killing us for no reason / Been going on for too long to get even / Throw us in cages like dogs and hyenas”. The lyracy and beat allows Lil Baby to transfer his message in an enraged and meaningful matter which gives his listeners an urge to rise in the fight for justice as he inspires and reaches out to anyone and everyone. — Yuma Hirokawa

In “Castle on the Hill,” Ed Sheeran invites listeners to reminisce about their childhood and teenage years with him as he drives to his hometown. The sound of the acoustic guitar mixed with Ed’s deeply emotional voice brings a raw and personal feeling to the song. The feelings behind the singer’s words are enough to bring someone to tears. In the song, Ed talks about how he misses his more naive days. He then shares with us a multitude of memories including him breaking his leg as a child and smoking with his friends as a teenager. He preludes all of these stories with the line “I was younger then, take me back to when,” perfectly describing the feeling of missing a time in your life. Although he shares both positive and negative memories, he looks back on them all with the same wistful, bittersweet nostalgia, much like the way we look back on mistakes from our childhood and laugh. A beautiful heart-felt song, “Castle on the Hill” is more than worth the three minutes.

Dodie Clark’s “Absolutely Smitten” is a fluffy, ukulele-driven bop that casts a warm glow on whoever listens to it. The bubbly lyrics accompanied with Clark’s posh and bright harmonies brings about a fluttering sensation, as she expresses the heartfelt innocence of a budding relationship. The acoustics bring a nostalgic feeling of infatuation that produces the impression of a coming-of-age movie. Dodie, often finding inspiration through her own experiences, conveys the excitement that circulates around the mutual connection people share. The lyrics seem to imply an outside perspective observing and pushing the two enamored people together, shown through the lines; “Pretty lady, look at how he’s smiling / I think he likes you!” and change of pronouns in the verses and chorus. Through her charming story telling of new beginnings of a youthful, blossoming relationship, Clark perfectly embodies the feelings of being lovesick—or as she puts it, “absolutely smitten”.

This is the first song in Jaden Smith’s album Cool Tape Vol.3. This song is a lot more vulnerable than his prior songs, because of how the song is reminiscent of one of his past relationships. Right off the bat the music begins with a harp, which represents us, the listeners, entering his dream. The song by itself is like a performance; it has a whole orchestra of instruments as well as a choir of voices in the back. There is also a sense of regret and sadness to the song, almost as if the melody itself is drooping. When the music fades away at the end of the song there is a sound that is like a machine winding down as we hear, “Jaden,” yelled three times. Jaden made sure to include this last bit so we can understand that his dream has ended and it is time for him to wake up. It is the definition of a “short and sweet” song that gives you a familiar taste of young love.

Synthetic noises and unconventional instrumentation set the tone for KONGO’s “The World Would Run Better,” which reflects on how we exaggerate the importance of our individual preferences. A more relaxed piece from the South African alternative rock quartet, this song effectively builds and releases its energy in a way that is both playful and contemplative. Lead vocalist Dylan Kongos sings the verses almost as if reciting poetry, before crescendoing into an upbeat chorus. The backing track offers a refreshing blend of harmonica, drums, and acoustic guitar, while distorted pulses frequently ring out. These befitting such nonsensical lyrics as “Argentina is too far south / They should move it closer to my house.” The second entry to KONGO’s album Egomaniac, this song asserts that it is problematic for any one person to believe the world should bend to their will, when “There are only seven [billion] of us / Who share this feeling.” In spite of a somewhat uncanny mood, “The World Would Run Better” maintains a hopeful melody that inspires listeners to heed its timely message.

  12. Man in the mirror is a song that takes us on an amazing, but emotional rollercoaster ride around the world, showing us all of the devastating events that had been going on. Michael Jackson uses more simplistic lyrics, rather than using metaphors and other tools that would require more unpacking of the song in order to make the message heard to everyone. The song was not made to make you think super hard, but its simplicity instead is what gets you to think, especially when partnered with the images shown throughout the video. He does in hopes of making the issues more personal for the audience, he does all of this while at the same time singing with an upbeat tone, which suggests that he truly believes that there can be some change.

“Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green

“Let’s Stay Together” is easily Al Green’s most popular song, hitting number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 at its peak. This early 70s song captures the warm feeling of newfound love, much like the feeling one has when they “get butterflies.” The horn section provides a gentle background for Al Green’s soothing and soulful vocals. Al Green sings of the feeling of what he believes is a perfect love, saying to stick together through thick and thin. The second verse suggests that this is perhaps Al Green’s first experience with love, as he doesn’t understand “why people break up?” and wonders why they just don’t “turn around and make up.” The song is a great ode to the joy of discovering love as a youth. Albeit naive, the song embraces the feeling of what love might be if it were that simple. “Let’s Stay Together” is a feel good yet mellow song dedicated to the hopes of loving “whether times are good, bad, happy, or sad.”

Shawn Mendes released his song “Wonder” in December of 2020. A sense of tranquility and loneliness is portrayed by both the tone and the song cover. The tone, which starts off as calming and slow, but as the song progresses the beat’s tempo speeds up to more hopeful. The cover of the song, which displays Mendes floating on his back in the open ocean in the rain also aligns the feelings of being overwhelmed and unsure of the future. Mendes explains the consequences of living in the spotlight, while searching for love and self confidence, and even describes his relationship with Camilla Cabello with the verse: “I wonder if I'm being real / Do I speak my truth or do I filter how I feel?” While listening to the song “Wonder” you are able to feel the confusion and uncertainty Mendes feels by the lyrics, melody and instrumentation; the same feelings all of us are definitely feeling while living in this pandemic.

“Not Afraid” by Eminem is one of Marshall Bruce Mather III’s most personal life-related
songs. Eminem dropped out of high school at a young age, only 17 years old. Using drugs was
the easiest way to escape his own life. After recovery, he wrote this song with a message that no
one is alone in this world. No matter the path you chose, there is always someone in your similar
situation and many more who will help those in a dark place to reach the light. This is
exemplified in the lyrics, “Whatever weather, cold or warm/ Just lettin’ you know that you’re not
alone/ Holla if you feel like you’ve been down the same road.” This song evokes a more secure
feeling, especially after having a better understanding of the lyrics. This sense of security is more
significant due to Eminem’s confident tone and the painful experience he went through and
emerged out of. Eminem raps to those who need help to follow his words into a better life.

I Miss You is the third track on blink-182’s self-titled album released in November of 2003. Haunting lyrics combined with alternating major and minor chords create a hypnotic effect. The song was recorded entirely acoustically and is the only song released so far featuring Travis Barker using brushes instead of drumsticks. Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge took inspiration from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. In the first verse, Mark promises the angel from his nightmare that they can live like Jack and Sally, having Halloween on Christmas. Tom takes the second verse in a darker direction, describing depression and its effect on a relationship. The chorus is my favorite part of the song lyrically and musically. The lyrics “don’t waste your time on me, you’re already the voice inside my head (I miss you, I miss you)” are accompanied by a swelling cello scale and a bright piano melody. I Miss You paints a beautiful picture of regret and longing that listeners throughout the world can relate to during our lonely new normal.
