Searching for La Perdida

  1. The song that I listened to was “Las Nubes”, which means clouds, by Little Joe. The sound of this song on the surface is very exciting and upbeat, and if you paid no attention to the lyrics, you might think that this is a very happy song. But underneath all of that when you listen to the lyrics it talks about a man that feels like his only purpose is to die and that no one really cares about him, a very sad song to be honest. This song kind of relates to depression too, on the surface everything might seem fine, but on the inside there is just an immense amount of pain that we wont know about unless we really listen carefully.

Although there are no words to this song, “Altos De Jalisco” by Wally Armendariz is able to convey happiness to the listener. Los Altos de Jalisco, also known as the Jaliscan Highlands, is the eastern part of Jalisco, a Mexican state. Los Altos is known for the architecture, Tequila production, and traditional Mexican festivities. Even though I have never gone to Los Altos, I feel through Armendariz’s song, I was able to feel what the spirit of Los Altos is like. The song relies heavily on the accordion skills of Armendariz, which gives the song a Caribbean flare. Additionally, the song transports me to the middle of a Spanish/Mexican festival with a mariachi band playing in the background.

The song that I listened to was “Dos Palomas Al Volar” which means “Two Doves Flying”. When I first heard the song I could immediately tell it had a mariachi type beat but it also sounded like it had some country folk influence, like something you would hear at square dance or something of the sorts. I also noticed that it’s quite short: only a little over two and a half minutes. Carmen Marroquín wrote and sang many songs with her sister, Amanda during the time of WWII, when the men were drafted into the war and had to leave their wives behind. The sorrow felt during this time can be clearly heard in the singing despite the upbeat instrumentals and moderate rhythm; in fact, I could tell that this song revolved around a sad topic before I even knew its background. All in all, it’s a beautiful song with lots of meaning and emotion behind it. The instrumentals and vocals are also extremely captivating!

The song that I listened to was “Te He De Amar” by Wally Armendariz. Armendariz is a musician and member of a band. When the song first started, I noticed the fast upbeat tempo right away. Wally Armendariz had a higher voice while singing this song. He would sing for a few lines, then the background music would continue to play on with no singing. The pausing between having only the music play and music with singing can allow for the audience to take in the lyrics of the song. Within the song, I could clearly hear the accordion playing as one of the main instruments. Although I did not understand the lyrics as it was in Spanish, I enjoyed listening to this song because of the happy vibe it gave off.

“El Huracán Del Valle” by Narciso Martínez has no lyrics to the song and only contains instruments. In the early 1930s, Narciso Martínez played this song and is known as a conjunto music. The sound of the accordion is delivered with power and joy. The music is very upbeat and has an original conjunto sound with a new style of Texas music. Along with the accordion, a twelve-string bass guitar is also involved in this piece. Similar to the music from Northern Mexico, tejanos found music of German immigrants. Martínez successfully delivered the fruitful sound of the melody along with the dynamic variations on the instrument. The buttons on the right side was used to deliver the sound of the original conjunto music. During this time, polkas, waltz, and many other variations of songs were famous and some of these types of genre were then interpreted with a Tejano style, similar to this music. Essentially, this music made me jump towards the energetic melody and rhythm of the beautifully played accordion.

I listened to the song “ Se Fue Mi Amor” by Carmen Marroquín and Lauren, her sister. The song was covered by Los Tucanes De Tijuana. I thought that the song’s english meaning is “My love has left”. The reason for the song's overwhelming popularity was because at the time men were being sent to war. Meaning that many men during this time had to deal with the struggles of leaving their loved ones to fight for their country. When listening to the song it is very apparent of the tune of the song and how it is more of a darker, more sad tune. It was a very slow song in comparison to many other mariachi types of music. It sounded like a song that you could very much slow dance to. I was actually very surprised with the music and actually thought that the song was very melodic even though I may not know any of the meaning or lyrics of the song. The very slow background drums really slowed down the song and allowed the vocals to shine.

The song I chose to listen to was called “Rosita” by Beto Villa. In Spanish, one alteration of the word, “Rosa,” means flower. Rosita is also used for a girl’s name. At first glance, I thought this song was going to be about a girl named Rosita and since there are no lyrics, I feel like the instruments were trying to tell a story about a woman. Beto Villa was well known for his saxophone playing. With no singing, you can hear the sounds of the saxophone but also a guitar strumming in the background. The guitar strumming gives the song a more calming tone to it as it keeps in piece with the song. The saxophone is clearly the featured instrument of the song, which is what Beto Villa is famous for. This song has a slow tempo, something you might hear in the background of a dinner party. I really enjoyed listening to this song because it helped me to calm my mind and gave me a sense of relaxation for a little bit.

I listened to the song “Ahora Que Estoy Enamorado” by Wally Armendariz. The first thing that you notice when you listen to the song is how upbeat it is. While this song has no words, it is a very good instrumental piece. Some parts of the song were faster than others which gives it personality being that there are no lyrics. There are many different instruments in the song and one that really stuck out to me was the harmonica. I don’t usually hear a lot of songs with the harmonica and I thought that it sounded really nice in this song. While I don’t know much about Spanish music, I really enjoyed this song and the instrumentals made me want to listen to more.

Selena’s “Como La Flor” is a song that compares a dying flower to losing love. The song begins slow as Selena builds up the audience through her live performance. Despite being a song of heartbreak, the song feels upbeat to those who can’t understand the lyrics and the artist even smiles as the audience sings along with her. “Como La Flor” became Selena’s first hit in the United States as it ranked number 6 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart in 1992. Her performance of this song in February 1995 was filmed only a few months before her sudden, tragic death in March of that year which left a long lasting impression, and made the song more meaningful to those who listen to it. The song of loss and death of a flower means more knowing how Selena’s life was ended as she was a flower who was just beginning to bloom.

  10. Listening to Little Joe, a singer raised in Texas with strong Mexican roots, he gained popularity through several genres from the blues to full Latina mariachi songs in completely Mexican. This time, in complete english, he sings “San Antonio”, an uplifting song about his life change as he signed with a record label in San Antonio. His soothing voice well expresses his love for that city while always representing his chicano pride yet focuses on the culture diversity of this city and the best parts of it. The lyrics combined with the melody, brings out a passionate and soothing side of Little Joe making this song a warming and pleasant tune for all.

The song i listened to was “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” by Selena. The song was released in 1994 as a part of her album Amor Prohibido. The song has a Latin vibe to it and the lyrics are all in Spanish. Even though i have no clue what the lyrics are actually saying, based off the music video and the happy, upbeat, and groovy tone and feel of the song it is safe to assume that the song is about young summer love and other happy things. The songs title “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” is repeated a lot throughout the song and for me is the thing that stood out the most. The song is very catchy and makes you feel like dancing. It uses a nice combination of drums, Moroccans, and woodwind instruments to create a very Latin sounding upbeat tune that matches perfectly with the lyrics and Selenas singing style

The song I chose is “Margarita” by Wally Armendariz and also covered by Santiago Jiminez. This song has an upbeat energy and beat to it. The singers also put a lot of force into their notes and sing quite loudly on the recording almost like they are simply speaking loudly most of the line before the last note is held out. They also do not put much effort into the timing or into necessarily blending the harmonies exceptionally well. This style of singing also gives the impression of being carefree and partying which fits a song titled margarita, an alcoholic drink. The make ground music gives it a mariachi band type of feel with the accordion and the guitar. I’d say this would a great song to have a large get together outside and dance while drinking and laughing with your friends in a very non formal setting.

I chose Las Nubes by Little Joe y La Familia. This translates to “The Clouds.” My first impression of this song is that it sounds ecstatic, as though a major celebration of something amazing had just happened. There’s a lot of happy emotions that I feel through the instruments and vocals of this song. The pace is quite fast, so it gets your heart racing in an excited way. For some reason when I listen to this, I get vibes of family. I feel like it’s a type of song that would play at a family gathering, or a happy festival (something of that sort).

The song I chose was "Dreaming of You" by Selena. Although Selena is known as the "Queen of Tejano" and her Spanish and Latin music was what she was known for, we see Selena make a nearly all English song in "Dreaming of You." The song resembles an R&B love song of the 90s, with a soft touch and a slow beat. The song utilizes the piano, both regular and electric, the regular piano to lay down instrumental runs that mimic the melody and the electric to provide backing chords. In the middle of the song, there's a break for Selena to do a sort of Michael McCary bit. McCary, a singer for the iconic R&B group Boyz II Men, is known for doing deep voiced monologues in the middle of their songs. Selena imitates this stops singing and in a deep voice, speaks lines in Spanish over the instrumental. There is a glimpse of Latin in the song's outro; as Selena stops singing an acoustic guitar comes in for a solo to play out the song. The runs and licks played resemble a very Latin sound. "Dreaming of You" is a great song and also headlines Selena's 1995 posthumous album.

“Se me Olvido” by Valerio Longoria provides evidence of the instrumental innovations that characterized Conjunto music. Unlike in traditional polka, the accordion both harmonizes and plays its own melodic statements in “Se me Olvido.” Longoria expands upon the Conjunto genre by adding vocal work to this track. This creates the impression that the accordion is echoing a response to the phrases that Longoria sings, a contrast in instrumentation which makes for a very pleasing listening experience. Longoria also adds an upbeat drum line, which, as the article states, further reflects his unique take on Conjunto. Though I could not find lyrics for this song, it seems that “Se me Olvido” is about forgetting sorrows from the past and remaining hopeful that things will get better.

The song that I listened to was “Las Nubes” sung by Tejano artist Little Joe. He is one of the most undisputed legends of Tejano music. This song that he sings is a real classic of the Tejano sound. When I first heard this song I thought of it to be very upbeat. I thought it was going to be a song on the more positive side. I think something that caused me to feel this way was the playing of the trumpet. It gave the song an energetic tone. However, since the song is sung in Spanish I wasn’t able to tell if my opinion was true or not. So I searched up the English version and found that the lyrics did not match my intuition. The song calls upon death and lost hope. Overall, the song does well bringing in a mixture of jazz and rock and roll music genres.

I listened to Those Lonely Lonely Nights by Earl King. Although the theme of the song is loneliness, the production is upbeat. The piano alternates between a major and a minor chord. This song makes me feel like I’m in an old jazz bar. I like the saxophone in the background. This song is simple overall, but well-crafted, and I can see why the author of the article enjoys hearing this song.

This song is called “El Huracan del valle!” And it was made by Narciso Martinez. This song comes up in the article when Ramiro Martinez talks about how Narciso was known as the father of conjunto music which is a blend between Tejano music culture and the sound of instruments brought by German Immigrants. The song itself is a lively blend between an accordion, string bass, and a bajo sexto which is a Mexican style guitar. This is a song I would imagine hearing at a party in Mexico or other Latin American countries. The way they play music is very common now in Spanish speaking countries but this piece is very influential to the style of music that was produced.
