“Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac encourages people to look forward to the future. In his speech, Jimmy Carter points out some flaws in America but offers some possible answers. He also encourages Americans to think of the future and the need for new sources of energy. “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow” supports this because of how it encourages the listener to look forward to tomorrow like how Carter wants Americans to look forward to a better America under his presidency.

“Only So Much Oil In The Ground” by Tower of Power raises awareness about America’s overwhelming reliance on oil. This supports Jimmy Carter’s call for different types of energy to be found as wel las the oil crisis that was happening in the 1970s. Lyrics such as “We just assume that what we use will not exceed the oil supply but soon enough the world will watch the wells run dry” and “There is only so much oil in the ground, sooner or later there won’t be much around” backs up these ideas.

“Shambala” by Three Dog Night refers to a time with good, cooperation, and kindness are present at all times. When Three Dog Night sings “Wash away my troubles, wash away my pain, wash away my sorrow, wash away my shame,” they advocate for an idea where all work together. Jimmy Carter does the same in his speech. He encourages Americans to come together to “win the war on the energy problem and in that process, rebuild the unity and confidence of America.”

  2. The first song in my playlist is “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones. The Ramones were a large influence on the rock scene of the time, something Carter was well involved in. The lyrics and general tone of the song evoke the idea of not only a battlefield, but a dance floor. I think that this is something Carter would have used to try to appeal to the young folks as he did in his presidential camapain to inspire the actions he wanted.

The second song I chose was “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees. This song was one of the most popular songs, once again something Carter might have used to gain popularity and familiarity with the younger generation. I think that the idea of “Staying Alive” is also something that Carter would have liked to portray during his speech, as his speech was mainly about building confidence in America so it could survive.

The final song in this playlist is Space Oddity by David Bowie. This song is slower than the other two, but would once again reinforce the idea of his popularity with the youth. The emergence of Glam Rock in Europe would also be sort of ironic and funny, as Carter’s speech was also about discouraging foreign imports to help the economy. The song references the Apollo 11, which is also referenced as one of the great acts in American history in the speech.

  3. “Heart of Gold”-Neil Young (1972) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh44QPT1mPE
Though this song sounds just like the lament of a lovesick man looking for his perfect partner with a heart of gold, but hearts of gold are usually attributed with someone who’s honest and true to their word. The search for a heart of gold in this case could be an allusion to the nation’s search for an honest president after Watergate broke the nation’s trust. In his speech, President Carter acknowledges the nation’s broken trust and basically pledges that he will work to gain their trust.

    “Energy Crisis ‘74”-Dickie Goodman (1974) novelty record/parody https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNtm6sMDPT0&t=23s
“Energy Crisis” ‘74 is a novelty record or a parody that pokes fun at the nation’s energy crisis and the gas shortage. During the mid-‘70’s much of the nation’s energy source came from foreign exports of oil and inflation was at an all-time high. People were unsatisfied with the extremely high prices of gas that often times weren’t even in the petrol tanks in the stations and this novelty record displays that perfectly with the narrative and samples of songs. This issue was the main focus President Carter’s speech in the fight against foreign oil dependency and though people thought Carter wasn’t making an effort to mitigate the problem he reassures the nation that he’s aware of their dissatisfaction.

    “There’s Trouble in the U.S.A. /Brush Harbor Meeting”-Alvis Barnett and the Barnetts (1976) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gF5lp6lU3g
This song essentially recaps the troubles and unrest that the nation experienced from the late 60’s to the ‘70’s and embodies the question that the American people ask, “what will this year bring?”. President Carter is aware of the trauma that the nation sustained in the past years and the growing tensions regarding America’s economic situation. Although he promises to work to solve these problems everyone is still on the edge of their seats trying to anticipate what will happen next after all of the events that have happened before.

In “Cheaper Crude Or No More Food” sang by Bobby “Sofine” Butler released in 1979, the song delivers the message of oil prices. The song portrays the answer to OPEC oil price hikes along with the oil prices being too expensive. Relating to the title of food, it also relates to the talk about not sending food. This relates to the 1973 Energy Crisis Carter was talking about in his speech. Moreover, the rhythm and the melody of this song is very bouncy, relating to the meaning of the song.

The second song I chose was “Gotta Have A Little Talk With The Peanut Man” by Smoggs released in 1977. There is a long introduction before the song in the beginning of the song. This song is a complete reference to Carter as it talks about his speech. It conveys energy crisis along with the explanation of having too much inflation. It is also delivered in the lyrics that we need a helping hand as the unemployment rates and taxes are high in America, which then relates to Carter’s speech. The rhythm is jazzy as it relates to the revolution.

“Murder in the Gas Line” by Randy Pump & The Gas-O-Lettes in 1979 talks about the oil crisis in the US. This song also refers to Carter as he talked about it in the speech. The whisper and the meaning in between the song are what stood out during the song. The title itself is obvious that it is related to Carter’s speech which is why I chose this song in the first place. The melody is also very interesting because of the various tempos and instruments in the song.

Those Darn Inflation Blues- Joe Dowell
The first song in my playlist is “Those Darn Inflation Blues” by Joe Dowell. This song was written in 1973. This is a country novelty song. Dowell sings about economic troubles, inflation, and how the cost of living is rising fast. I thought that this song matched Jimmy Carter’s speech because he addressed the problems the country was facing. One of the main reasons why Carter gave this speech was because he wanted to address the oil crisis in America. Dowell also sings about a gas shortage, walking and singing of pure emission blues. He sings about how cars use twice as much gas.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPZsz_bzwz4
    Gasoline Blues- John Mayall
The next song I chose for my playlist was “Gasoline Blues” by John Mayall. This song was written in 1974. It falls under the genre of blue rock. I think that the song was sort of an energy crisis protest. This makes sense considering that this is what America was going through at the time. Carter’s speech addressed this fact exactly. I’m sure many Americans were distraught over this terrible experience. The song talks about running short of oil in the US. Mayall sings about rations and how the prices of products are going up. His message is to take what you can get because the prices will only increase as the problem gets worse or continues.

I’m Glad I’m Prepared for the Recession
The last song I chose was “I’m Glad I’m Prepared for the Recession” by The Fast Flying Vestibule. This song despite its hearty message sounded very upbeat and optimistic. The artist singing didn’t not seem to be mad and actually sounded glad that he was prepared for the terrible crisis going on in America. He sang about the hard economic times, inflation and running out of gas. He also referenced Nixon, Ford, and Kissinger in the song. In Carter’s speech he mentioned that many people felt distant from the government and I think this song may kind of address that feeling that people had.

The main point of Carter’s speech is how America is lacking in confidence. What better way to represent this than a confidence song. This song by Queen is all about confidence. The title of this song, “Don’t Stop Me Now,” can definitely be understood as a confidence booster. In the lyrics, there are signs pointing towards confidence. For example, “There’s no stopping me” is sung to show that when you have confidence built in you, you can do anything. This song connects to Carter’s crisis of confidence speech because he claims that America has no confidence which is why he was making this speech. This song is a perfect representation of having confidence because the lyrics are inspirational in getting your confidence up. Queen is a rock band and this tune is all about the upbeat tempo. In the beginning of the song, it starts out very mellow and almost soothing but then it quickly transitions to an upbeat rhythm. There are some parts in the song where it goes back down to a more mellow tune, like towards the ending of the song. Overall, I thought this song captured the message of gaining confidence well and is something to put on this playlist.

    https://youtu.be/7s6VbOEnsgk
Carter’s “Crisis of Confidence” speech has another main point about staying optimistic for the future. In this song by Bill Withers, “Lovely Day” is a very optimistic song. Though it is sort of like a love song as it talks about the connection between two people. The lyrics “lovely day” are repeated a numerous amount of times to symbolize the fact of being optimistic. Even though life sometimes does not give you everything you want, you don’t have to give up just because one thing didn’t go your way. This song has a mix between an upbeat tune to a softer tune. It is not essentially a “rock” song but it has a good rhythm to it. This song is the perfect feel good song that you want when you are feeling down. It talks about the lovely day, even though in this case, it is more about love. Though this has a totally different message than what Carter is trying to get at with this speech, I thought that this song showed the optimistic side perfectly as you should always look forward to the next day because it can be better than yesterday.

This last song, “Imagine” by John Lennon, is a very slow and mellow song. With the piano as its featured instrument, this song is perfect for winding down for the night. The lyrics behind the song is something I think that Carter’s speech is about. “Imagine all the people / Livin’ life in peace” is alluding to Carter wanting peace within the country. As he addresses the oil crisis, I believe that Carter does not want to have to deal with this anymore. All he wants is a country that is perfect. This song also reminds me of a Christian song. It seems very promising as through the lyrics and it just has this very mellow tune which I love. I really enjoyed this song and I know I will definitely be listening to it more!

“Hungry Planet” by the Byrds brings up the important issue of what is happening to the Earth. In Jimmy Carter’s speech, he talks about the importance of conservation and he also vowed to never use more foreign oil than in 1977. The song and Carter’s speech share the similarity of raising awareness to these types of problems and Carter’s speech also points out some solutions. The song is told from the Earth’s perspective and talks about how they “had a youthful face,” but then the humans started to take over and towards the end, it states “the people kept choppin’ down / All my finest trees / Poisinin’ my oxygen / Digging into my skin.” This upbeat rock song compliments Carter’s speech with both having the same message.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVBbV4Th6Dc
“The Crude Oil Blues” by Jerry Reed is an upbeat country song that also talks about the oil crisis. The song’s story talks about the entire problem starting with some of the beginning lines being, “We’re low on heat ‘n’ all / We’re low on gas.” The entire song talks about the problems during all of this and didn’t put any of it in a nice way. It talks about being cold because of the shortage and how they can’t do anything else because of it. This relates to Jimmy Carter’s speech because he knows that this was a major problem and he addresses it in his speech. He tries to think of ways to help this crisis and those solutions would hopefully help people that Reed describes in his song.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZfZ8uWaOFI
“Dream On” by Aerosmith and Jimmy Carter’s speech both give off the message of hope. The song is an upbeat rock song that gives the message of dreaming until it comes true. It talks about how time can move so quickly by saying, “And it went by, like dusk to dawn.” It also has some other interesting lines such as, “I know it’s everybody’s sin / You got to lose to know how to win” and “ Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away.” Overall, while this song speaks directly about dreaming and hoping for better things to come in the future, I think that Carter’s speech also carries on that message. While it isn’t talked about as directly, I think that it still gives off that same feeling of hoping for a better future to come.

Released on a 1977 album by Bob Marley & The Wailers, “One Love/People Get Ready” is an anthem, calling for togetherness. Carter’s speech talks about restoring faith, especially in the church. This lines up with the message of this song with the line, “Give thanks and praise to the Lord and I will feel alright”. The song is mellow and just something to sing along to while being something that can really resonate with other people as it not only talks about God, but also just finding love in yourself.

“September” by Earth, Wind, & Fire is an instant confidence booster with it’s instrumentals that immediately makes one want to get up on their feet and dance. During the seventies, disco was a huge thing, along with dance on the rise belong side it, upbeat songs like “September” help bring out natural confidence in people. Gaining confidence in the American people was one of Carter’s main goals. Looking at his speech within the context of the 70s, the genre of disco is one that has to do with confidence

To Carter, regaining confidence for the people meant restoring their faith in their government and their country as a whole, but most of all he had the confidence that it was possible. “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, while being a song about recovering from heartbreak, Carter’s message of his speech is similar to the general idea of bouncing back from something bad. His speech is him telling country that despite how broken the country is, he is reassuring citizens that they will survive with his help as president. The beginning the lines, “At first I was afraid, I was petrified” describes Carter seeing the initial state of the country, but as he took office, he planned on making a change.

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor is a disco song is one of the best amongst the rest of the disco songs becasue of the catchy and upbeat tune. It makes you want to dance to groovy beat. This is the type fo song that gives an empowering effect on people. It includes timeless lyrics that address timeless concerns. A different type of meaning to this song can refer to Carter’s speech and his point that there are better views in the future ahead during the 70s. This song is mainly about leaving a bad relationship, but I thought it played well into Carter’s point of how the US will survive the energy crisis. In the song it states, “as long as I know how to love/ I know Ill stay alive,” which states how she will able to survive because she knows how to love someone else. This can refer to Carter explaining how the US will survive due to the American values at hand and by looking forward into the future.

John Maywall’s “ Gasoline Blues” is a blue rock song that speaks up about the energy crisis that occurred in the 70s. The tune is quite upbeat and has a faster beat that allows for the flow of the song to carry on. The energy crisis, as mentioned in Jimmy Carter’s speech as well as this song, talks about how the US is running low on gasoline/ oil. In order to fix this crisis, the US is raising their prices in order to compensate on the shortage. Maywall’s lyrics mention how he is struggling to make money due to the raising prices and overall economic turmoil. It also mentions other struggles he is facing due to the energy crisis and this is what many other people are facing as well.

John Lennon’s “Imagine” was released in 1971 and it offers a slower tempo song with a deeper piano playing as the main instrument. This song is popular and known around the country as a song that offers a vision of a world that comes together as one. This song can refer to Carter’s speech of how he hopes the country will come together in unity because unity was a problem in the US during that’s time. “Imagine” also gives Lennon’s hope of freedom and peace in the world, something that was wanted by Carter as well as other people too. In order to reach world peace and freedom, Carter and Lennon are trying to diagnose the underlying obstacles amongst the country.

The first song that I choose was “Cheaper Crude Or No More Food” by Bobby “Sofine” Butler. Originally written by Brent Burns the single released in 1973 and was #46 on country music charts. The song brings up the issues of the oil and gas prices rising. The goes along with Jimmy Carter’s speech because Carter mentions the rising gas issues similarly to the American people and goes against the government. This is exactly how the song is presented and an average person complains about the Prices of oil and rising inflation in the economy.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wvG5DXn1kM
The last song that decided to add to the playlist was “Those Darn Inflation Blues” by Joe Dowell. Covered the inflation and how it impacted the american citizen and how it affected them. In Jimmy Carter’s speech he said much of the same things about how inflation is rising and how price gases are becoming very high. This theme of dissatisfaction connects the song to the speech showing an issue of how American people are dissatisfied with the government and how they are dealing with all the inflation and oil prices. But In the speech he notes how American people are dissatisfied with themselves.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5JqPxmYhlo
The next song that I choose was “Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest. The song is a very uplifting song with a tune that would make you want to dance. I thought that the song related to Jimmy carters speech because it gave off the same feeling that you can do anything. During his speech he says “We know the strength of America. We are strong. We can regain our unity”. He brings the uplifting message to america, and creates an overall feeling that as American citizens we can come to overcome the difficulties of the time.

The first song in my playlist is “I’ll Pump the Gas Jimmy(You Run the World)” by Ernie Dunlap. The song was released in 1977 and falls under the Country/Novelty genre. In his speech President Carter addresses the major energy crisis that is going on in America and what he’s doing to try and fix it. He tells the American people that this crisis is a major issue and that he needs the American peoples help. He says that he is going to listen to the voices of America to help him fix the energy shortage. The song has a strong country feel. Right from the start you hear the banjo playing and the country style guitar. Ernie has a nice mid range southern country sounding voice. The song is set in Georgia and talks about Carter and what he’s doing about the gasoline lines. The verse that stood out most to me was “I’ll Pump the Gas Jimmy You Run the world”. Ernie seems to think that this energy crisis isn’t a big deal and that Carter is wasting his time worrying about it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6vK6PZ-kG8

The second song on my playlist is “The Inflation Blues” by Kenny Walker. The single was released in 1978 a year after Carter was elected into office. The song falls under the country/novelty genre. Another issue that Carter talks about in his speech is the economic crisis in America. There was major inflation and an economic recession during his presidency that was impacting the economy. The song is very country sounding with instrumentals of a guitar and harmonica. Despite its somber song title the song is surprisingly upbeat and catchy. It reminds me almost of a theme song from a kids show. The song is basically about “turning around” to stop inflation “all over the nation”.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7dTBoW5H9k

The third and final song in my playlist is “Mr Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra. This single was released in 1977 and is a progressive pop/soft rock song. In President Carter's speech he makes several points to tell the American people to have hope and look to the future. Carter believes that since he is now president the future for America is looking bright and sunny days are coming soon. He feels very optimistic and confident despite the claims that America lacks confidence. He also tells the American people to have confidence in him and in themselves. Even though Carter faces an energy and financial crisis on top of other problems created by Nixon he is still positive and optimistic for the future. The song itself is very upbeat and happy from the start. The song's upbeat fast moving beat is composed of a mix of drums and what sounds like a lower guitar. The beat makes you feel like dancing and the lyrics are easy to follow and sing along with. The songs mantra is all about staying positive and happy even during hard times when life gets you down.

The first song I chose was “Get Up, Stand Up” by, Bob Marley and the Wailers. This is a reggae I song that came out in 1973. This song is like a lot of their other songs with a steady beat and slow music. This song is a protest song about the people standing up for themselves. I thought this connected with Carter’s speech really well because in his speech he mentioned how he wanted the people to stand up and fight together.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H-kA3UtBj4M
The second song I listened to was by Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On.” The song came out in 1971. This song is also another slow song combined with Marvin’s mellow voice and smooth instruments to back him up. The song is about the people questioning the government, wondering if what their doing is right. Also how Marvin thinks that the nation just needs more love. This relates to Carter’s speech, because the speech was like a response to this song. Carter was one of the first Presidents’ to actually address the problems going on especially economically. Because he was so honest the people felt like they could trust him.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YkgkThdzX-8
The last song I listened to was “Imagine” by, John Lennon it came out in 1971. This song is another slower song by John Lennon but in a way it almost sounds like an anthem because of the lyrics. The song is about Lennon imagining a future where there is peace and love instead of war. This relates to Carter’s speech because one of his goals was to bring peace and convince the people to have confidence in the government again.

“September” by Earth, Wind and Fire is a very famous feel-good song about a particular night in September. It is a big part of the disco culture that was famous during the 70’s and the beat and lyrics reflect the carefree and fun attitude of people during the 70’s. The 70’s was also a time of restoration for America in particular as showed by President Carter’s speech. And “September” captures the feeling of a new beginning for America.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfNpHd1GaQA
“Easy” by Lionel Richie is another song that relates to the mood of the 70’s. It has a super laid back chorus and melody which give the listeners a feeling of comfort. I felt that this song reflects the calm and controlled nature of Carter’s speech and how in America there was a much stronger sense of peace and togetherness in part due to the many protests of Vietnam and the civil rights movement.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkgkThdzX-8
“Imagine” was released in the beginning of the 70’s and John Lennon was a huge inspiration to the new generation of peace mongers in America. It tells of a fictional world in which all people got along and the world was a perfect place. It reflects the sense of a new era of American culture and I’m sure many looked to this song as a model for what the world should look like. It shows the beauty of working together and this is an idea that is reflected in President Carter’s speech as well.
