The first song I listened to was “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.” This song is about leaving someone you once loved. As the article said, Bob Dylan was some what simplistic. This song was very slow, did not have any surprises and very calming to listen to, which is probably one of the reasons why it works. I think another reason why this song was popular because you can feel the sadness in his voice so Bob Dylan portrayed emotion through this song very well.

The next song I listened to was “Masters of War.” This song was a lot different compared to “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” it was much more political. I think this song was touching on the subjects of war and maybe the controversy of whether or not people should be allowed to own guns. If its not than it proves that Bob Dylan is relevant today, even though this song was released almost sixty years ago. One of the reasons why Bob Dylan was so popular with younger generations was because of songs like these, where he shares what younger generations believes in through song. This song was much faster compared to “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” which makes sense because it is talking about a much more aggressive topic.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q86fhpjENk
The last song that I listened to was “Chimes of Freedom.” This song had a much more upbeat and faster tone to it compared to the last two songs I heard. I think this song is basically about life in general, the struggles, successes, goals. One of Dylan’s friends stated: Bobby’s talking for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe.” I think that that perfectly describes his song and proves how relatable the song can be to anyone. In the song it describes a variety of emotions ever person feels at least once in their life, including disappointment, pain, and joy. I think this is why this is a great song because anyone can listen to it and find some comfort in the lyrics.

  2. From the article, Bob Dylan comes off as a confident, humble young man who knows his place in the world. He seems to be like a lot of singers who turned out to be revolutionaries; he never called himself a revolutionist and yet many others would disagree with his statement. In some ways, Dylan is care free since he didn’t want to be strictly associated with the civil rights projects during the 60s. However, Dylan does care about change happening. He recognizes that the turmoil happening in America must come to an end but only after they moved away from “old” America and became a “new” America.

“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” showcases Bob Dylan’s guitar, singing, and harmonica skills. As supported by the article, Dylan’s singing tone is phenomenal; his voice is a clean, almost country sound. This song is about a break up but the guy won’t let the girl know that she hurt him. Although this particular song doesn’t classify as a “Civil Right’s Song,” it still fits in with the time period. The article shared that songs during the 60s were about voicing a person’s own concerns using an old folk music approach. Here, Dylan is singing about a relatable topic of a break up while showing his own concern that the guy in the song’s feelings will get the best of him and expose his true feelings to the girl.

“Blowin’ in the Wind” has many different meanings. I believe this song is primarily about peace. Dylan could be talking about world peace, peace between the disputing groups in America, or finding peace within ourselves. Dylan’s solution to the problems at hand during the 60s is that it is blowing in the wind. This is a very relaxed, optimistic way of looking at things. I think that this is exactly what was needed during the 60s: gentle encouragement. To me, the song gives me the same feeling as “Imagine” by John Lennon; the song is relatively simple, with only the singer’s voice and a single instrument, but speaks of things that go beyond their time period.

  3. Bob Dylan produced influential folk music that he both wrote and performed. In the article folk music is described as music that is traditional and changed throughout generations and generations. They are typically seen as old family related songs that are traditions. From the article, Dylan was an adventurous and impactful young man who was using his surroundings as inspiration for his music.

    https://youtu.be/TuJfEMO_wXs
“Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” starts with the strums of his guitar, setting the soft mood for the rest of the song. Throughout the song, the harmonica is played to fill the empty spaces when he isn’t singing, which creates the rural setting. This song is a representation of traditional folk music as the lyrics tell a story about a relationship that had lasted too long. His voice contains the classic country twang and he shows a certain type of personality in the way he snarls during certain parts of the song.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KY2lQV3ADfc
“Only Pawn in Their Game” also uses his guitar to showcase his feelings within the song. This song refers to the murder of Medtronic Evers, who was a civil rights activist and the leader of the NAACP. Within his lyrics, Dylan is suggesting that Medger’s killer was not the only person guilty of the murder, which plays on with the title on how he was “only the pawn in the game.” The tone of his voice stays the same throughout the entire song because it allows for the story to be understood more.

  4. This 1964 article on Bob Dylan expands on the influence of folk-music. This article goes in depth on Dylan’s impact on music. Describing his outstanding performance, the article describes his powerful songs that was written as poetry. His personality is seen throughout his music as it is why American folk music began to rise. His hard work and determination played out, mentioning some of his unique style of playing and singing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMFj8uDubsE
As mentioned in some of my previous blog posts, “Blowin’ in the Wind” by Bob Dylan is one of my favorite songs from the 1960’s. My mom mentioned that this was one of her favorite song when she was young. This song is powerful because of the poetic lyrics that is being portrayed to the audience. It is about the American Civil Rights Movement and how black American’s voices were not being heard. Moreover, a harmonica is played by Bob Dylan in the middle of the song. I thought it was so interesting that he decided to play the harmonica by himself and sing along with it. I believe that the extra instrument and the mixture of his relaxing voice made the song more complete.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rowYBDHISU
“Talkin’ New York” by Bob Dylan is the second song I chose to listen to. Again, a harmonica is introduced in the beginning of the song, leaving an impact. He sings this song like he is talking to a friend of his. The poetic deliverance of this song is explained as the song describes his first months in the city of New York. He found New York a difficult place to get steady work done as a musician. Eventually, he talks about how he found friends and how he began to fit in better. I personally think that this was one of Bob Dylan’s favorite songs as it relates to himself a lot. The strumming pattern of the guitar is also portrayed throughout the song as it is similar to his other songs that I have listened to.

“Only A Pawn in Their Game” shows off what the article was talking about as “folk music.” This song is pretty slow and has a nice beat throughout. The lyrics in the song talk about the murder of Medgar Evers. This song was pretty bold and it suggested through the lyrics that both people black and white were victimized by discrimination. This was a very strong message and it was one that not many would talk let alone sing about back during this time. Other than the song having a strong message, I thought that it really showed off Bob Dylan’s vocals and the different style that he liked to sing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92cF_KCH7TU
“My Black Pages” has a very strong message and I think that the lyrics show it very well. This song is a reflection of Dylan’s earlier protest songs and it suggested how much he has grown. It shows this in lines such as, “Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.” The song also talks a lot about things such as prejudice and equality which I also think is really important because it also suggests how much he is reflecting back on his older songs. This is a really slow, relaxing song that I think is really nostalgic relating to Dylan’s life.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWwgrjjIMXA
“Blowin’ in the Wind” shows off Bob Dylan’s wonderful guitar playing as well as him playing the harmonica. This song can have many different interpretations of the lyrics, but I think that it’s talking about peace as well as things such as the Civil Rights Marches which can be seen in lines such as, “How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?” I think that the main words “blowin’ in the wind” suggest that while we may have many questions and challenges, they can be found in the wind meaning that they are sometimes fast and always changing, but you know that they will always be there.

  6. From what I gather from the article, Bob Dylan seems to be a humble man with a good sense of the world. He seems more laidback compared to other artists, just making music because he wants to. Despite how famous he is, he does not seem to forget his roots, not letting his popularity get in his head and ruin himself. He seems to put a lot of heart in every song he makes. I found it interesting that when he tried to play in a club he was told he sounded too much like a “hillbilly” and how he later became the most famous man in the country for his “hillbilly music”, it shows how he never let others change him just so he could make it in the industry.

song 1: the times they are a-changin’ https://youtu.be/e7qQ6_RV4VQ
This song represents Bob Dylan’s open mindedness as there was significant development in activism of the 60s. He is calling out to people of the world to just go along with the changing world instead of resorting to negative feelings about it and ignoring that its even happening. The lines that spoke to me are “Come mothers and fathers / Throughout the land / And don’t criticize / What you can’t understand”. This song is one of him directly speaking to his audience, the people of America. Him telling parents to let their children be as they gain their own identity, while also not to stick to traditional (harmful) values that they grew up believing.

song 2: only a pawn in their game https://youtu.be/MCjGSbm2LFc
This is one of Dylan’s more political songs, having done sung it at a rally. It talks about the effects of white privilege in America through singing about the assassination of Medgar Evers. This is extremely apparent as the story of the song is of a southern politician taking advantage of the disadvantages of black people. The lines that stuck out to me the most are “That the laws are with him / To protect his white skin / To keep up his hate”. I feel like this could also apply to today as so many laws still manage to protect white people, which lets them get away with things that one wouldn’t if they weren’t white.

“Masters of War” captures the “folkness” of the song. Bob Dylan uses this song to show off his guitar playing and his tone of voice. There is that hint of country within the song as when Dylan is singing, you can hear that country accent as if it was from the South. The “masters of war” seems to be a figure as he portrays this as a human being. The lyrics itself seems pretty dark as it has a brutal ending of Dylan singing about making sure this figure is dead. The song ends abruptly as there is no real conclusion to it. Overall, I thought this song was pretty good and showed the country part of Dylan himself.

    https://youtu.be/u-Y3KfJs6T0
This next song, “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,” is very different from the last song mentioned above. This song gives the New Orleans, Southern vibe, more of a folk song as there are harmonicas playing throughout the entirety of the song. Imagine living in the South and your grandpa is sitting in his rocking chair playing the harmonica. That is what the song makes me think about. Though this song has the relaxing tune that everyone is looking for, the song itself is pretty sad. The song is about a man leaving his woman because things weren’t working out between them. You would not expect a breakup song to have a relaxing tune like this. Although the song is pretty sad, I thought it was such a great song and something that I would listen to again.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vWwgrjjIMXA
This last song by Bob Dylan is called “Blowin in the Wind.” I listened the live version and it seemed the crowd really enjoyed this song. This song sounds a little more country to me than any other style of music. He really showcases his guitar playing in this song as it is the featured instrument. What struck me the most is the lyric, “The answer is blowin’ in the wind,” because it shows that there is always an answer to every question. Though it may not be clear at first, you can always find a way to answering a question or solving a problem. The song itself is good but his guitar playing is what stands out most about the song. He is an excellent guitar player and by featuring this on the song, it shows audience what he is most known for.

Bob Dylan is regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. One of the songs that he sings that sticks out to me is “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right.” This is a song that Dylan really lets his emotions out into. It expresses true heartbreak since it was written after his breakup with his first serious girlfriend. The melody of the song is positive with musical accompaniment by the guitar and harmonica, but there is a certain bitterness behind the lyrics and tone. The message of this song is that it’s important to remember to love yourself and focus on being content/happy with yourself.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rowYBDHISU
“Talkin’ New York” is quite different from the previous song. It still utilizes the harmonica and guitar, but the speak/singing that Dylan does makes this song different. This song was written during the first months Dylan was in the city. He got turned away from a coffee shop because he looked like a “hillbilly” and the audience wanted only folk singers. This song told more of a story in a more serious tone.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMFj8uDubsE
“Blowin’ In the Wind” sounds like more of a melodic song. There is continuous music going in the background and Dylan actually sings in this one. This is a very peaceful song with a relaxing tune. This song is filled with a bunch of rhetorical questions that have the same metaphorical answer to it. This song kind of touches upon the fact that the knowledge we may be seeking is right in front of us, but sometimes we just can’t seem to see it.

“Motorpsycho Nightmare” is honestly pretty funny to me. It’s a satirical song about an old story about a travelling man, a farmer, and his daughter which is a far cry from some of his earlier songs, apparently. The article talks about Dylan’s goal to move away from the “finger pointing”, and this song feels like it really works. It is definitely not associated with any “movement”, more like a lighthearted tune. The singing is more like, talking to a beat, as opposed to a melodic voice, much like folk songs of the time.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoagldK69U0
“It ain’t me babe” is a song about a man leaving his woman because he can’t be the one she needs. Like “motorpsycho nightmare”, it ain’t me does not have a message about equality or some over arching theme. this song is melodic, less funny, more like a song than a chant, fitting the small theme fo love.

  10. From the article I actually learned a lot about Bob Dylan as a person. He was a very simple man and didn’t need much money to be happy. He cared a lot about his friends and family and perused music after teaching himself how to play the guitar. I really liked how they described him as a city hillbilly because that’s kind of what he was. He played this folk music which talked about the mountains and nature, but lived the the city and slept on the subway.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMFj8uDubsE
The first song i listened to was “ Blowin' in the Wind”. I actually really liked the song and noted elements of the folk music that was referenced in the article. I noticed the simple acoustic guitar in the background and the harmonica. I can only imagine the harmonica strapped around his neck and he plays in his own unique way.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iHhWh9FtsQ
I also listened to “ Don't Think Twice, It's All Right”. I liked this song also and it was different in some ways. The song is made up all of guitar background with all plucking used all throughout the song. There is no other instruments other than the harmonica being used and it makes the song feel so personal. I think that also the song felt so personally because it was kind of like a reflection and questioning himself, but relives tension at the end noting that everything will be all right. Overall I really liked the music of Bob Dylan and found the music unique and nice to listen to.

When I read the article describing how Bob Dylan sung his songs, it described him as harsh and rough. However, that greatly contrasted with how I would describe his music after I listened to some of the songs cited in the article (such as “Blowin’ in the Wind”). They were much gentler in nature and I would’ve been rocked to sleep by some of them because they seemed much calmer than the article described his music to be. I found it interesting how even though Bob Dylan had a soft and subdued demeanor he was also very passionate about society and wasn’t afraid to speak up about the issues that American society faced during that time period. Bob Dylan was known to be a prodigious artist and expressed his distaste for societal problems with the elegance and beauty of written poetry; to add on top of that, he was well known for his voice and the way he sung which is why he subsequently represented the hopes, dreams, and dissatisfaction of the young generation with his musical talent.

  12. “Masters of War”
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEmI_FT4YHU

The first song I listened to by Bob Dylan was “Masters of War,” this song was kind of interesting and also on the longer side. The song had like a country and a little bit of rock sound to it. But Bob’s voice was pretty soulful, but you could also hear the country in his voice. It was like he was telling a story about how humans can be very cruel especially during war, and he talks more of all the destruction and corruption there is.

    “Don't think twice”
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iHhWh9FtsQ

The second song I listened to was “Don’t Think Twice.” I really liked this song because it was a little slow and steady and you can really hear the guitar in the background. I also thought it was interesting to incorporate the harmonica solo into the song. Also, even though I didn’t comment on his voice in the first song. His voice is very unique, he sounds like he’s been through a lot with his rough voice. Similar to the first song it’s a very simple country song.

    “The Times They Are A-Changin”
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90WD_ats6eE

The last song I chose to listen to was, “The Times They Are A-Changin,” actually the real reason why I chose this song was because I thought that the title was interesting. Just like his other songs this was another simple song with very few instruments and his harmonica solo. Once again you can hear his soulful and raw voice telling his story through this song.

The first Bob Dylan song I listened to was “Blowin’ In The Wind”. Out of the three Bob Dylan songs I listened to this one is by far my favorite. I really enjoyed listening to “Blowin’ In The Wind” because of the song's overall sound and flow. Bob Dylan sings in a relaxed and gentle tone that matches perfectly with the smooth and soothing picking of a guitar. Throughout the song Dylan tends to stay on the same pitch never going to high or low always staying somewhere in the middle. His voice sounds like he’s singing from his chest or throat giving him a unique and recognizable voice. the songs lyrics Dylan asking a bunch of questions about life and there answering them with one phrase, “The answer is Blowin’ in the wind”.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iHhWh9FtsQ

The next Bob Dylan song I listened to was “Don’t Think Twice, Its All Right”. The song has the instrumental sound of a picking guitar and a harmonica. The song has a steady following beat and pace. The song is very mellow and soothing and he stays with the same pitch throughout the song. He sings in more of a lower pitch/tone and spaces out each verse by a couple seconds. Some parts of their song sound less like he’s singing and more like he’s talking to someone which I found very intresting. I especially enjoyed the plucking of the guitar and the harmonica solos that happened every so often.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzxjE2NdpzQ

The 3rd and final Bob Dylan song I listened to was Only A Pawn In Their Game”. The song opens with a guitar being played in a pluck strum style. It is accompanied by a harmonica playing sharp notes followed by longer notes. Compared to the other 2 songs this one is faster paced and has more energy. Bob Dylan keeps things interesting by adding inflection to some of the notes causing jumps and falls. He goes back and forth from lower to higher tone/pitch. His voice is very unique and has a throaty and chesty sound when he goes lower. Like most of his songs the lyrics tell some sort of a story and some parts sound more like enthusiastic talking rather than singing

The first song that I listened to was “Only A Pawn In Their Game”, this song was kind of confusing to understand. What I got from it was that it was calling out the racist ways that were considered to be somewhat normal at the time. I also think that in a way he was talking about the fact that a black man was murdered and the person that did it was not being punished for it, “he cant be blamed”.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GMIGQX5sUus
The second song that I listened to was, “Motorpsycho Nightmare”, this song it’s one that has a pretty fast tempo. The fast playing of the guitar gives the song an upbeat, exciting feel to it. The lyrics of the song play along with this idea as well, it talks about him trying to find a place to sleep and the crazy story of him getting chased by a farmer. This song in general was just kind of like a roller coaster, it was just a crazy ride and all you can do is go along with it.

  15. From the article, I could tell that Bob Dylan revolutionized the genre of folk music. Before him it was relatively small in comparison to other song genres but he would change that forever and become a part of mainstream American music. He was very humble even when he rose up and this really surprised me. He was aware of his surroundings and the entire world throughout his whole life and you can see it through his music.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G58XWF6B3AA
“Blowin’ in the Wind” is one of Bob Dylan’s most important songs. At the time it was released, America was rapidly changing and the world was beginning to look more and more different than it had in the past. I loved this song because of Dylan’s deep lyrics where he reflects on the changing landscape of America, “The old road is rapidly aging. So get out of the new one if you can’t lend a hand for the times they are a changin’”. Dylan’s vocals and harmonica parts are integral to the feel of the song and give it a feeling of looking for the future. The lyrics of this song are still relevant today which is why to me it is one of Dylan’s best songs.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iHhWh9FtsQ
“Don’t think twice, it’s Alright.” Was the second of Dylan’s I listened to. This song has a very different feel from Blowing in the wind as it is at a slower pace. It has a very soothing feel as a man talks about a lost love. This song shows the diversity of Dylan’s music collection as he seamlessly transitions from love songs to songs about society while still producing beautiful music. The one thing that stands out about Dylan songs is how he imprints the message of songs so well that it is hard to miss. I can see how his success was so large with this amazing talent for songwriting.

The first song I chose is Blowin’ in the Wind by Bob Dylan. I chose this song because it is just one example of composure that other artists wanted to be a part of. After reading the article and listening to the music, it is hard to understand where all the meaning lies. Full of metaphors, this song is really about a boy growing up wanting to know when he is “qualified” to be a man. For example, in the lines: “How many roads must a man walk down/ Before you call him a man?” These lyrics are at the very beginning of the song. The number of roads can be referred to as the number of experiences or at what point in a boy’s life can he then be acknowledged as a man. Overall I thought this was a good song that wasn’t super fast pace yet it was not dull.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEmI_FT4YHU

The second song I chose is by Bob Dylan, Masters of War. Like many of Bob Dylan’s songs, there was some meaning to be told, as a protest. My first choice song, Blowin’ in the Wind, was more about conformity, being accepted life as a whole, just growing up. This second song I chose is exactly what anyone would guess. It’s about war. Having the guts, being sent into war, being ordered to kill someone, and leaving no accountability. War is a messed up place, but Bob Dylan can talk about these protesting matters making him a leader to those who want to speak their voice but chose not to.

  17. Blowin in the Wind
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMFj8uDubsE
This song is great. First thing that comes to mind as I start to play it. It seems like the song’s lyrics tales the listener into the simple yet complex mind of Bob Dylan. With a simple acoustic guitar riff, he gets the message across of freedom and simplicity. I’m pretty sure this song is about the American involvement in the Vietnam War. The calming steady guitar gives you that similar feeling of laying in a grassy field with no worries, nothing but you and nature. I get a lot of nature vibes from this song, going back to nature’s simplicity in things as small as blowing wind. I would add this to my Road Music playlist.

    Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuJfEMO_wXs

This intro is beautiful in itself. It immediately draws me into the song. This song seems like Dylan is trying to express his sense of stress free living. Don’t think twice, dont second guess everything or worry about all the small things. I think this song sounds sad, and the lyrics give me a similar vibe. It’s interesting how many songs can only be “catchy” if the lyrics rhyme a bunch too, however, Dylan here proves you don’t need perfect rhymes to make an amazing piece. His distinguished voice mixed with finger picking can put me out of any bad mood honestly. I would also add this to my road music playlist.

The first song I listened to was “Blowing In the Wind” by Bob Dylan. He starts with a very country style guitar strum and his organic and simple voice. It’s nothing spectacular but in combination with his harmonica, guitar, and his lyrics, I see how Bob Dylan was very popular. He almost looks careless in the live performance. He has the slightest changes in facial expressions but his emotion is still present in his performance. The meaning of the title of the song is matched by the energy of the performance. It’s very mellow and laid back. I could see how stress relieving this song might be to listeners. “The answer is blowin’ in the wind” is almost like Dylan is reassuring his audience to not worry about a thing, there’s always a way.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Y3KfJs6T0
The next song I listened to was “Don’t Think Twice It’s All Right”. Straight off the bat I noticed a difference from the last song but also a similarity. His voice, guitar, and harmonica is back but the mood is slightly but noticeably different. It’s a sadder song talking about the narrator's lost love. I see the similarity in themes despite being a deeper song than “Blowing In the Wind”. It’s again a “forget about it” and don’t worry about it type of song. He’s once singing in a mellow and softer voice. However, I noticed more attitude in his singing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEmI_FT4YHU
The final song I listened to was “Masters of War” which is even more different from “Blowing In the Wind”. It’s a much faster pace song then his other two songs I listened to. He talks about war and guns which makes his voice a bit more empowering compared to his other songs. He’s talking about this “you” which I’m not sure who it is, maybe the government. He’s definitely criticizing the world for the violence and death. In this song, he doesn’t play his harmonica and sounds way more passionate on his guitar and also hits higher and louder notes vocally which brings a new level of impact to his music which I admired.

I watched a live version of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War.” It’s one of his well-known “finger-pointing” songs. I think the live performance was a great representation of his personality. He isn’t dramatizing the music or the subject of the song, but matter of factly pointing out the problems with war and the people who cause it. The song is simple musically and has lyrics that are easy too understand and relate to. Although “Masters of War” seems to be primarily about the ironies of people in positions of power during wars, it’s ending is about sweet revenge. Two of the final verses are, “I think you will find//When your death takes its toll//All the money you made//Will never buy back your soul,” and “ I'll watch while you're lowered//Down to your deathbed//And I'll stand over your grave//'Til I'm sure that you're dead.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q86fhpjENk
In “Chimes of Freedom,” Bob Dylan is singing for every person who has ever struggled. In the article we read, he speaks about the difference between performative activism and caring about other human beings. I think this song shows how he truly cares for others because he is telling their story. The final verse captures the essence of the song, “Tolling for the aching whose wounds cannot be nursed//For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an' worse//An' for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe//An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing.” “Chimes of Freedom” is played with multiple guitar players that weave their parts together. I think this mirrors the way that the song combines the stories of many people.
